Just remember that you have the option to dodge (with Circle/B on a controller), and practice using it early. Think of it as your “get out of trouble button.” The secret to taking on almost every one of them is to dodge sideways at the last second. Journey to the Savage Planet isn’t combat-heavy, but you will run into quite a few unpleasant local animals. It’s a great way to find enough goo for the first few increases to your health - and perhaps more importantly your stamina, so you can run longer earlier, and explore faster. Shoot or slap it, and you’ll often find that it was hiding that delicious goo. And any Orange Goo you find will help increase your health and stamina, making exploration easier. Collecting extra resources - especially Alien Alloys - means getting faster upgrades. Throughout every area, resources and upgrade materials are squirreled away in hard-to-reach (or at least not obvious) places.
Journey to the Savage Planet is great at telling you where to go, but don’t sprint past the world on your way to the next waypoint. You can change what mission or secondary mission you’re tracking in your Journal. If you’re carrying any resources when you die, you’ll have a gift box icon on your compass (you’ll also get a Secondary mission to collect your resources) to lead you back to your loot. A purple kite icon shows any secondary missions you’ve got available. A yellow kite icon shows the next waypoint for whatever your active mission is. The stylized orange K (for Kindred Aerospace) - it looks like a track back button from a media player - on your compass points back to your ship.
